Show Your Work!

I recently read the book Show Your Work! by Austin Kleon. This book gave me many insights on how important it is to not be afraid to share things that maybe you don’t think are amazing because in reality someone else will. The key takeaway I got from this book is that you don’t have to be a genius. If you are an amateur you’re at an advantage over professionals. This stood out to me the most, amateurs aren’t afraid of trying new things, making mistakes, and experimenting. Its scary going into a a new profession feeling like you don’t have enough knowledge or experience, and this book shows you how great a new mind and a fresh perspective can be. Show Your Work! also talks about how important it is to share what you do and what you care about, you can’t find your voice if you don’t use it. To work towards showing your work start by sharing something small everyday, I began doing this by showing small things to my friends and family such as a homework assignment, a social media post for the company I work for, and bits and pieces of my web-sight. When you feel like you’ve learned all that you can, start over, rebuild something new.
